Beatrix was my Border Collie, my best friend, and my soul mate. She first appeared in The Magical Tearoom on the Hill, where she featured in some of our shared adventures — though as it turned out, she had her own version of events entirely.
After the book was published, Beatrix began telling me her side of the stories. Her perspective, it’s fair to say, was often quite different from mine. That’s when she decided she needed a book of her own, and asked if I’d do the typing. I didn’t hesitate.
Beatrix couldn’t manage the laptop keys herself as her paws were more suited to digging and carrying sticks. So she told the stories, and I wrote them down. Writing this book changed the way I see the world. Through the eyes of a clever, sensitive, loving, energetic, intuitive, and occasionally bossy dog, everything looks different.
Part One begins on 27 January 2013 in Dalguise, Perthshire, where a puppy called Beinn Fhada comes into the world and begins her life. A life she was always convinced was essentially human.
Her adventures are many. A real-life mountain rescue when her poorly mum needed help. A hypothermic stranger found in the cold. Skiers accidentally herded. A lifelong obsession with sticks, stones, balls, and the Baby Jesus from the handmade nativity scene - though she was never allowed to eat him.
And then there is the time travel. Because Beatrix’s adventures had no limits.
Which tales are true, and which are fiction? Only Beatrix knew for certain.
