It’s been a busy few weeks getting here. Between writing the story, editing, typesetting, working through illustrations with Jess, and sorting out all the unglamorous admin that goes into getting a book onto a shelf, today feels like a proper milestone. There’s always a heap of nervous excitement that comes with opening pre-orders — it’s the point where the book stops being just mine and starts being something you’ll all get to hold.

I created this book after a workshop at Kilsyth Primary School last year. They wanted the book to have a purple cover to match their uniform. Did they know purple is my favourite colour?

In this one, Florence is given a magical new collar by Aurorla the Arctic unicorn — a reward for standing up to the evil dragon in her last adventure. But as any child (or adult) knows, with something magical comes a bit of responsibility too. Florence and her friends have some learning to do about restraint, and there’s still the small matter of Sara the fairy’s missing wand to sort out.

Rhona the magical bunny makes a cameo appearance. Thankfully, her suggestion of what Florence could do with her new collar is rejected, or it would have been hanging from a branch of a very tall tree!

Pre-ordering is one of the most helpful things you can do for an author. It helps generate early momentum and brings the story to more young readers — so if you’ve got a Florence fan at home, in your classroom, or on your gift list, now’s the time. And if you’re like me, you’ll already be thinking about unique Christmas presents. There is nothing more special than introducing children to the joy of reading and having a series to follow. As a child, I would save up my pocket money to get a magazine and looked forward each week to it. Why not get children looking forward to the next book in The Magical Adventures of Florence the Border Collie?
