About the Book

Beatrix the Time Travelling Collie

Beatrix, my Border Collie dog, best friend, and soul mate, featured in some of the tales and adventures in my first book, The Magical Tearoom on the Hill.

After this book had been published, Beatrix began talking to me about all the stories I'd written involving her but telling them from her viewpoint, which was often very different from my memories.

That's when Beatrix had the idea of writing her own book, and she asked if I'd type it up for her if she could tell the stories in her own words.

I didn't hesitate. Writing this book for Beatrix has made me see the world differently through the eyes of a clever, sensitive, loving, energetic, intuitive, and bossy dog.

The stories in the book are a combination of memories from Beatrix and myself. Beatrix tells the stories, but I always did the typing because Beatrix couldn't get her paws to work the tiny keys on the laptop. One day, somebody will create a bark-recognition software package for other dogs to tell their stories.

It was no surprise to me that as I chatted with Beatrix (yes, I talked with my dog), she also revealed some of the mystical secret adventures she had when she regularly left the comfort of her home.

Part 1 of the book starts in Dalguise, Perthshire, on 27 January 2013 as Beatrix is born and begins to tell her life as a dog named Beinn Fhada, but then becomes Beatrix, a human dog (yes, she believed she was a human).

Adventures include a real-life lassie-style rescue on a mountain for her poorly mum (me), finding a hypothermic human, and accidentally herding skiers.

Life for Beatrix revolves around her obsessions, mainly sticks, stones, and balls. But then there's Baby Jesus from the handmade nativity scene that comes out each year. She was never allowed to eat him, though.

But she also travels through time, where her adventures have no limit.

Which tales are true, and which fiction?

Only Beatrix knows for sure.
